Alfred Deakin High School
Protest Poetry, 2019
Alfred Deakin High School is a Year 7 - 10 school formed in 1989 from an amalgamation of Deakin and Woden Valley High Schools on the site of Deakin High School. The school encourages and enjoys the confidence and support of its community, both local and more broadly across Canberra.
Poet CJ Bowerbird leads workshops on Poetry for Change with students from Alfred Deakin High School.
CJ Bowerbird is a spoken word artist and physical performer. Winner of the 2012 Australian Poetry Slam, CJ explores what it is to be human, writing about things we have lost, things we never had and things that are slipping through our fingers. CJ’s poetry has been called ‘earnest’ and ‘moments of heartfelt tragedy combined with raw humour’.
His practice ranges from solo shows to interdisciplinary collaborations. He particularly enjoys working with other artists to tell multi-sensory stories. In 2018, CJ released Beyond This Blue, a recording of the show he wrote and performed with the Downfall Choir for the 2017 National Folk Festival.
CJ has been a featured performer at the Bookworm International Literary Festival in China, Woodford Folk Festival in Australia and the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in Indonesia. He is a two-time TEDx Canberra speaker and combines words with clumsy movement as part of the Sound & Fury Ensemble.
