The School

Churchlands Senior High School is a state co-educational school in Perth, Western Australia.  The school is also Western Australia’s leading selective music school providing specialist tuition to the state’s gifted young musicians.

The Project

Celebrated poet and 2014 Red Room Poetry Object judge Scott-Patrick Mitchell visited students at Churchlands Senior High School to present an exciting poetry workshop. With activities inspired by the Poetry Object learning resource, Scott-Patrick led Year 7 students in discovering the poetic wonders in their favourite belongings.

The Poet

Scott-Patrick Mitchell

Scott-Patrick Mitchell’s poetry has been described by Bold Monkey’s George Anderson ‘as one of the most diverse and original emerging poets working in Western Australia today’ while John Kinsella has described his work as being ‘new ahead of the new’. SPM recently performed his new one man show THE 24 HOUR PERFORMANCE POEM at Crack Theatre Festival while his latest collection – inner pity poems – was released through Department of Poetry in 2016.

He has been featured in two Fremante Poets books, New Poets (2010) and Performance Poets (2013) (Fremantle Press). He appears in The Turnrow Anthology of Contemporary Australian Poetry (2014) and Contemporary Australian Poetry (2016). He is Editor of MoTHER [has words...]., Social Media Coordinator for WA Poets INC and Senior Australian Poetry Editor for LA based THE POETS WITHOUT LIMITS.
