By Devika (Year 8, Wilderness School, 2019)

Worn metallic paint
Burning through my soul.
Once vivid memories,
All consuming. Evanesce.

A soft white blanket,
Broken by tawny spots.
Arid black nose,
Comforting. Best friend.

Dew blanketed grass and
Timid clink of metal hooks.
The whisper of the breeze.
Eternal moments. Beatitude.

A coffin of ice warmed by love.
The rush of blood, a
Tear stained heart, then
Silence. Deafening silence.

A blank space stares back at me,
Numbers drilled deep into my brain.
Anamnesis encased in metal.
Hold tight. Infinitely.
